The 2017 Formula 1 British Grand Prix Preview

first_imgLewis Hamilton will be seeking his 4th consecutive wins in Silverstone this weekendAttention shifts this weekend from the uncertainty surrounding the future of Silverstone, albeit temporarily, to the exciting prospect of the 10th round of the 2017 Formula 1 season as the season reaches halfway at the home of motorsport in Northamptonshire. The race for the championship this season has become more open than ever between homeboy, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. However, the decision of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, owners of Silverstone, to activate a break clause in their contract earlier in the week represents a warning signal that unless a new contract is signed, 2019 will be the final year the British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone. That is one depressing prospect many formula 1 fans around the globe loathe. In contrast, the exciting prospect of the battle between the leading Silver Arrow and Prancing Horse drivers taking another dimension this weekend offers a brief reprieve. It is a home race for Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes’ driver could equal the record for most consecutive wins in a home race at this weekend’s British Grand Prix. The 32-year old Brit has won the last three races at Silverstone. If he takes a fourth on Sunday he will match the achievements of Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark, who won their home races in Argentina and Britain four times in a row.In effect, the Sunday’s race at Silverstone means more than just a record chasing race for Lewis Hamilton, it is one race that could have a profound effect on his charge for fourth championship win. If the Stevenage born driver had a very good race he could overtake Sebastian Vettel and become the championship leader, he could also be easily overtaken by teammate Valtteri Bottas if he had a very bad race.Technically, for teams’ engineers and principals, the focus this weekend will be on gaining high-speed stability on a Silverstone circuit that places little or extremely low emphasis on braking energy. Downforce levels are medium: a compromise between ensuring enough aerodynamic grip to negotiate the fast corners as quickly as possible and eliminating drag on the straights. Pirelli’s decision to take its super-soft tyre compound to Silverstone this weekend presents huge challenge for the teams as many parts of the asphalt at Silverstone are new, with the new asphalt less bumpy and abrasive than the older sections. Abrasive asphalt increases grip, but also adds to levels of wear and degradation. With Silverstone being among the most demanding tracks for tyres of the entire season, the decision by Pirelli to drop its hard tyre compound in favour of super-soft has come under criticism within the formula 1 paddock since the decision was made after the Spanish Grand Prix in May. However, Pirelli’s Head of Car Racing, Mario Isola has explained that the decision was taken in order to ‘’open up extra possibilities for different strategies and push teams towards more than one pit-stop.’’ British Grand Prix in BriefTrack: The Silverstone CircuitLaps: 52Track length: 5.891 kmTyre allocation: Medium (white), Supersoft (red) and soft (yellow)Lap record: Mark Webber – 1:33.401 (Red Bull; 2013)Number of times: 71 (first held in 1926)Most wins (drivers): Jim Clark (5 wins); Alain Prost (5 wins)Most wins (constructors): Ferrari (15 wins) Last Race (2016)Pole: Lewis Hamilton- Mercedes – 1:29.287Podium: Lewis Hamilton- Mercedes – 1:34:55.831; Max Verstapen – Red Bull – +8.250s; Nico Rosberg – Mercedes- +16.911sFastest lap: Nico Rosberg – Mercedes- 1:35.548 Last Five Winners2016: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)2015: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)2014: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)2013: Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)2012: Mark Webber (Red Bull) Silverstone Circuit Layout In Rich Vein of FormDespite Mercedes being quick enough to take pole position for the last three races in a row before the British Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel has increased his championship lead over Hamilton in the last two of them. Vettel’s only win at Silverstone to date was the third of his career, back in 2009, since when he has won another 42 races. Writer: Soliu AdeyemoSoliu is a renowned Formula 1 Expert. Follow him @SolihuF1 on Twitter and Instagram for more updates and analysis. Valtteri Bottas won the 2nd race of his F1 career last weekend in AustriaAs it stands, Valtteri Bottas is the man of the moment especially on the back of a commanding drive last weekend in Spielberg to secure only the second win of his formula 1 career. Agreed, his triumphs this year have come when his Mercedes’ teammate Lewis Hamilton has faltered but this should take nothing away from the Finn’s superb form. It is certainly a no brainer to think that Mercedes will allow the 27-year old Finnish to steal the title ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but the fact that he is even being mentioned in world championship contention is a reflection of how well he has performed in his first year at Mercedes.Another driver that has continued his amazing run of form is Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo who took his fifth podium in a row on the weekend Red Bull was left wondering what might have been had it qualified better on Saturday. The Australian has racked up more points than anyone bar Vettel, who has also collected 85 in the last five races.Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel got himself into this sector with his second place performance in Austria; the German is in his best form since joining Ferrari.Struggling with FormIt has been a frustrating few races for Max Verstapen due to technical problems and, as on Sunday, first-lap contact. He has not scored a point in the last three races and slipped to seventh in the championship behind Force India’s Sergio Perez. Another homeboy Jolyon Palmer needs an improved performance to keep his Renault seatHowever the other home driver this weekend, Renault’s Jolyon’s Palmer, is still looking for his first point of the year. He has come close, with three 11th places in the last four races, but with rumors abounding he could lose his seat he badly needs to break into the top ten.Weather EffectLast year’s British Grand Prix, but weather forecast for tomorrow’s race suggests no repeat of last year’s Silverstone wet race is expected. With this forecast, it simply means for the umpteenth time this season weather would not play any critical role in deciding who emerges winner in Sunday’s race.My PredictionIn Austria, I stuck my neck out for a winner other than Hamilton or Vettel and I was right, especially with my audacious decision to pick either Bottas or Ricciardo over Vettel and Hamilton. This is surely a make or mar race for Lewis Hamilton especially after storming to another pole position ahead of Ferrari’s duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in qualifying earlier on Saturday. With Mercedes’ teammate Valtteri Bottas taking 5-place grid penalty for his unscheduled gearbox change after damaging his gearbox in Austria, Hamilton is well on course for his fourth consecutive wins in Silverstone.British Grand Prix Start TimeThe race starts at 1pm Nigerian time on Sunday, 16th July 2017. Related Max Verstapen is in search of his first point in the last three racesIt is the belief of many pundits within the formula 1 paddock that the young Dutch has got what it takes to win the drivers’ championship in the nearest future, but he needs to be more matured in his approach to races. If anything, driving maturity has been his bane in the last few races, as he has been responsible for more crashes this season. The pressure has mounted on Max Verstapen to turn the table as quick as possible considering the incredible form of his teammate in the same Red Bull’s RB13 car.Big Look OutForce India arrive at their home race following a largely positive season. Despite clear missed opportunities in Baku and Canada chiefly due to problems with their drivers, the team approaches the mid-point of the season in a very strong fourth place in the championship.last_img read more

NWPL Super4: THE UGLY SIDE

first_imgNasarawa Amazons won the final of the NWPL Super4 in an exciting encounter against Delta Queens and lived up to the festive and carnival-like atmosphere that was promised by the Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) way back in August during the press conference to announce the draws for the competition in Lagos. In a competition where expectations were huge especially with the recent achievements recorded in football from the female u-20 team thrashing Tanzania to the Super Eagles qualifying for the group stages of the World Cup in Russia anything less than eventful and glamorous would have been considered a failure.Though in all sincerity the competition lived up to the expectation but nothing is wholesomely beautiful and thebusybuddiesng.com is here to give you a low down of the ugly side of the NWPL Super4 you missed.Organisation:Yes you guessed right we are starting with the organisers, it’s a respected gesture to want to follow international standards but the saying “Rome was not built in a day” finds big placement here. In a time where female football worldwide is still yet to gain significant recognition doing simple things the simple way won’t hurt anybody. Match day 3 almost lost the aura after organisers decided to move both matches to 4:00pm as against the (2:00pm and 4:00pm) earlier stated for each match respectively. It’s understandable that organisers felt moving both games to the same time would show transparency but the match between Baylesa Queens and Rivers Angels couldn’t hold because the pitch chosen for the match was water logged from rains earlier meaning it had to be moved back to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and played under the floodlights. Well one good thing came out of this people outside of Edo State now know that the floodlights at the stadium works but imagine if they didn’t work…..let’s leave that to your imagination.Still on Matchday 3 and the organisers it was bad enough that the games were moved but proper communication won’t have hurt anybody. Imagine as a fan finding out on matchday that games had been shifted. Finally with the organisers, security is a vital part of football matches. If we are going to bring back the fans to the Stadium then we should be able to assure them of their safety. Imagine entering the stadium and having no security agent at the gate to check fans for dangerous instruments and the likes. Security personnel stationed in the stadium were on the touchline with the coaching crew and it’s strange because the pitch is barricaded from the fans. Also the few security personnels stationed in the fans area were assigned to the VIPs.Commentary of the Games:The organisers took time to make the event a perfect success but missed the point of a commentator actually commentating on the match. Yes we understand the need to give due appreciation to the sponsors and partners who made the competition a success but a commentator should give the fans detail to detail events of the game on the pitch and not bore the fans with unnecessary sentiments. Kudos to the organisers though they corrected it as the competition wore on but it really shouldn’t have occurred in the first place. The Media:We saved the best for last and this is written with all humility as we respect all our senior colleagues who took time out of their busy schedule to cover this competition because truthfully what’s a football competition without the media to showcase its beauty. Enough with the pleasantries (by the way it took a lot to do that) and no name or media outlet would be mentioned as we don’t want to give unpaid attention to anyone. So at the press conference to kick-off the competition, a journalist asked what the plan was for journalists and the chairperson made it sound like a sort of partnership to promote the women league. So you can imagine the surprise when the post-match conference after each game was attended by a few media outlet and if you thought that was a surprise imagine the bigger surprise when the final of the tournament was flooded by media personnel….good you say (we thought so too till the bigger shocker). So our nosy correspondent while looking to grant and gather interviews came across a gathering of people and was curious to know what was happening as there were no questions been asked or answers been given instead it was a group of men hauling out names of media outfits. When our correspondent finally got a hold of someone the information was to write the name of your media outfit. So on went our correspondent and as soon as our media outfit was named, a fit of laughter erupted and one of the journalist said “which one be that one” then comes out the identification card and another journalist said “why are you trying to cash on our money”.And our correspondent was still trying to make sense of it another journalist comes and says “write my name I can’t be sharing money with my cameraman it won’t be like the last time and reeled out his name which was written down” and to crown it all up another journalist comes and says “you are a journalist bah, who do you report to (to this she answered by mentioning her bosses) and the man says only SWAN is recognised here”.  While all these was on-going some other journalist were hauling insults at each other as to why their media wasn’t recognised, why some people would get more than them etc.To say this was ugly is an understatement, if we are going to grow sports in this country and make it acknowledged at the international level the media has a big part to play hey but what do we know…..I leave you to be the judge of that.Relatedlast_img read more

BHA strengthens safeguarding measures with new policy

first_imgShare Submit UK Racing pushes for drastic levy reforms as deep recession looms August 25, 2020 Julie Harrington takes the reins as BHA CEO August 11, 2020 Related Articles Share StumbleUpon Scottish racing to resume from 22 June June 19, 2020 The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is aiming to strengthen racing’s safeguarding methods, with the publication of a new, overarching Safeguarding Policy, Regulations and Code of Conduct for the sport, .The policy, which will come into effect from 1 January 2019 will work alongside the existing safeguarding methods and will cover areas such as abuse, inappropriate relationships, reporting safeguarding concerns and safer recruitment practices.Nick Rust, Chief Executive of the BHA, commented: “For this sport to have the bright future we are all working together to achieve, we must attract the interest and participation of people of all ages. It is vital that those people who we do attract to the sport have a positive and fulfilling experience and are protected from all forms of abuse and harm.“As the governing body of racing, the BHA has a particular duty to protect young people and adults at risk from harm that may arise from their participation in racing.“However, this duty is not confined to the BHA. It is shared by everyone in racing. We all have a role to play in promoting a positive culture and experience for everyone involved in our sport. We trust that the new safeguarding obligations will be positively received, demonstrating Racing’s commitment to the protection of its youngest and most vulnerable participants.”Matt Mancini, Lead Safeguarding Manager for the BHA, also spoke positively of the new methods: “Several sports have been under close public, media and political scrutiny on safeguarding issues, following a number of scandals over the past few years. As a result, all sports governing bodies, including Racing, are ensuring their safeguarding practices and policies are in line with current best practice.“We greatly appreciate that many trainers already provide excellent levels of care for all their staff. The introduction of the BHA’s Policy will ensure we remain in step with other sports, ensuring and demonstrating that we have high standards of protection in place for any young people or adults at risk employed within our industry.“Through our Safeguarding Policy, the BHA has put in place practical measures, tailored to the requirements of Racing, that seek to minimise the risk of harm, and enable the BHA to respond as appropriate to concerns whenever and wherever they may arise. We call on anyone who has any such concerns to contact us.”Grant Harris, Chief Executive of the British Racing School, added: “The BRS has the most stringent safeguarding policies in place while trainees attend the School. We work with the NTF and trainers – the employers – to ensure that our graduates are safeguarded in the workplace. We all have a duty of care. “We all need to show the outside world that racing is an attractive vocation where the workforce is safe. The BHA’s Safeguarding Policy will reinforce these policies and messages that we are an industry that takes seriously its responsibilities toward the young and vulnerable working in racing.”last_img read more
