USGA pledges no repeat of rules gaffe from last US Open

He didn’t think he caused it to move, called in the walking referee and no penalty was assessed. But when the USGA saw video, officials thought there might be a penalty. They told Johnson when he was on the 12th tee, saying he might be penalized and they could review it after the round. That would have been fine except that it was the final round. Johnson played the last seven holes not knowing if he would be penalized, and thus not knowing the score. It was a major gaffe, saved only by Johnson playing so well that he had a four-shot lead when he birdied the final hole to win the U.S. Open. After meeting with officials, he was given a one-shot penalty that affected only the margin of victory, not the name on the trophy. The USGA has a five-member rules committee led by Thomas Pagel, the senior director of rules. Pagel will be the chief referee for the U.S. Open, who can make immediate decisions that would stand.A repeat of the Johnson incident is unlikely this year, and not just because the greens at Erin Hills are nowhere near as fast as Oakmont’s putting surfaces. He missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the bumpy green.Part of that could be attributed to weather in the Pacific Northwest that week.As for Oakmont a year ago, that was a breakdown in communication and delivering the ruling at the right time.“We not only learned from it, but we made changes,” USGA executive director Mike Davis said. “And I think that’s the way you have to approach anything that doesn’t go right: ‘How can we make it better? India vs Sri Lanka World Cup final: Gambhir, Kohli up the tempo against Lanka

first_imgChasing 275, India are 86/2 in 16 overs with Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli at the crease against Sri Lanka in the World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Live score | Latest match photos There was major disappointment in sort for the Indian fans as Lasith Malinga claimed Virender Sehwag on the second ball of the India innings trapping him leg-before.Post that wicket, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir were trying to revive the innings and they were doing it at a good rate scoring in boundaries. But, as they say good things don’t last long and their partnership too ended early and again the man in question was Malinga. Tendulkar went for a cut but ended up giving an edge to keeper Sangakkara with 32/2 on board. He scored 18.Sri Lanka innings Mahela Jayawardene scored a ton as Sri Lanka put 274/6 in 50 overs against India in the World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan started of cautiously as India seamers S Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan got busy trying to keep a good line after Sri Lanka won the toss.Soon Zaheer got the man he wanted claiming opener Upul Tharanga on the first ball of the seventh over. The ball took the edge of Tharanga’s bat and Virender Sehwag took a fine catch in the first slip. Sri Lanka score at the stage 17/1.In the 17th over Harbhajan Singh accounted for the other opener Tillakaratne Dilshan with his turner. It was a soft dismissal that took away the batsman’s leg stump when he was trying to sweep the ball down the leg side. He fell for 33 and Lanka fell to 60/2.advertisementPost that wicket, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene started off slowly dealing in singles but gradually upped the tempo. The duo had put 62 runs for the third wicket, when Yuvraj Singh got the man India wanted. An edge of Sangakkara’s bat was lapped up by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps on 48 and Sri Lanka went down to 122/3 in the 28th over.Yuvraj Singh could have got another wicket in the form of Thilan Samaraweera, but the replays showed that ball had not touched the batsman’s gloves or the bat before landing in skipper Dhoni’s gloves. Soon Mahela Jayawardene and left-hand batsman Tilhan Samaraweera got on with a partnership. But as has been the case in this match whenever two batsmen got going Yuvraj got the breakthrough. Here too when the duo had put 57 runs for the fourth wicket Yuvraj Singh claimed Samaraweera on 21 with an LBW written against his name.  Sri Lanka were 179/4 at the stage. There was more to come as Zaheer Khan struck back and removed new man Chamara Kapugedera with a well disguised slower ball. Kapugedera ended up giving an easy catch to Suresh Raina at mid-wicket and Sri Lanka were reduced to 182/5.Jayawardene went on to complete his century and he did it in good time using just 85 ball to reach there. In the 48th over off Zaheer Khan, he hit consecutive fours to reach the milestone. But Zaheer proved to be a little lucky on the last ball of his over with Nuwan Kulasekara getting run out on 248/6.But, the drama was far from over as new man Thissara Perera plundered him in the last over helping the team put on 274/6. He hit two consecutive fours and then a massive six off the last ball nullified Zaheer Khan’s efforts that had seen him bowl three maiden overs at the start of the innings. In fact, Sri Lanka scored 54 runs in the last five overs – their highest total in Batting Powerplay in this World Cup.TeamsSri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara(w/c), Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Thissara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suraj Randiv, Lasith Malinga, Muttiah Muralitharan  India: Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni(w/c), Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanthlast_img read more

A niche for me

first_imgSneh dithered about absently in the kitchen – should she make paneer or chicken curry? Pihu preferred non-veg while Ajju relished paneer. Sneh settled for a paneer dish, hoping it would be liked by all. She instructed the maid about the vegetables to be peeled, chopped and stored in the fridge while she went about other sundry household chores. She opened her husband’s almirah and neatly stacked up the freshly ironed laundry. Her eyes fell on a pair of cotton socks. The elastic had loosened. She made a mental note to buy a new pair soon. Sneh then headed towards the bathroom for a quick bath. Refreshed, she paid obeisance to the deities. She ate the leftover sandwiches she’d prepared for her children’s tiffin and then set out to make lunch. It wasn’t that they couldn’t afford a cook, but Raj preferred her cooking. The lavish praise her family heaped on her and the content look on their faces encouraged her to indulge them. Wrapped in the loving world of her family, she sometimes felt overwhelmed at her good fortune. She crossed her fingers and then smiled wryly at her childishness. The doorbell rang breaking her reverie. She went to the door, wiping her “kitchen” hands on a towel. As soon as she saw her visitor, Sneh stood agape in surprise. ‘Well! Aren’t you going to invite me in?’ said Anita. ‘Anita! Wha… How in the hell did you reach here? Oh! Do come in!’ ‘Well, well! Someone had to make an effort!’ answered Anita, laughing and enjoying the surprise she had thrown at her friend. ‘Since you look so comfortable in your beautiful world,’ she continued, eyeing the house appreciatively, ‘it would have taken 10 Hercules to pull you out to meet your old friends.’ Sneh gave out a girlish giggle and said, ‘Oh I am so happy to see you. Come, be comfortable.’ Ten minutes later, with snacks and coffee mugs in their hands, they sat talking animatedly. Anita and Sneh had begun their careers together, although in different lines. Sneh was a copywriter with an ad agency while Anita was in marketing. And now, Anita was the marketing area head in a well-known firm. Anita eyed Sneh pointedly. ‘So! Our copywriter is quite busy ad libbing lipsmacking menus these days, eh?’ ‘Yes! Quite a change, isn’t it? I mean I never thought of myself being in my mom’s shoes, but I am and you know what? I am enjoying all this,’ chirped Sneh gesturing around the house. ‘Don’t you ever miss your job, the money, and the excitement of it? I just can’t picture myself in your position even for a moment,’ said Anita. ‘Some things give fulfillment only once you have experienced them. And marriage is one of them. It cannot be assessed or fit into any parameter. You create its value yourself. Raj and I have found the right way to strike a balance fortunately,’ said Sneh. Anita smiled indulgently. ‘You look the very picture of it. But since I have seen the Sneh of the yore, I simply can’t fathom why you chose to shut the doors on something you were so good at. Don’t you miss it? The creativity, the money?’A flicker of a smile remained on Sneh’s face as she ruminated a while. ‘By God’s grace, money is definitely not an issue; but yes, whenever I recall my copywriting days, my pulse rate quickens. You’re right, I enjoyed doing that a lot. But now I have no time left for anything apart from my family. And I am enjoying it.’ ‘But I still feel you must remain in touch with your professional side too,’ persisted Anita. ‘And you? Aren’t you ever going to stop or slow down awhile? When do you think you’re going to settle down?’ asked Sneh.’I have been asking myself that too. The fact is that my career is going great guns at the moment. If I get married now, it may prove to be a professional hara-kiri. I can’t seem to fit marriage in my schedule. Married women are somehow considered incompetent. I don’t want to undertake that risk.’ ‘You’re overdoing your career deal, I tell you. Your bio-clock won’t listen to you so readily in a couple of years.’ ‘Don’t you think I realise that? But if I take the plunge now there are sharks waiting to shove me out of the game. I have worked so hard to achieve what I have. I am scared it will all go away in a jiffy. Sneh understood Anita’s insecurity and the personal sacrifices in spite of all the time and hard work she’d been putting in.’It’s a man’s world. Women have to set different priorities as against men because we’re of a different physical and mental set. Time is running out for you and that’s a risk you’ll have to take. You’ll need to draw the line somewhere, sometime,’ said Sneh. ‘Praful has proposed to me twice.’ ‘What? And you refused that nice man your good company? Didn’t your mom have something to say to you?’ Sneh exclaimed. ‘Yeah! When I refused, Ma and Pa were furious. I thought I was taking the right step. And sure enough, I got a promotion soon after. I am due for the next big leap soon and I am not going to jeopardise that now,’ said Anita.’Sneh, I am scared; I may not end up doing a good job of marriage and then also ruin my career,’ said Anita’Anita, there will never be an end to this. You’re wasting the best years of your life. You haven’t a family yet and very soon you won’t have Praful in your life too. Strike a balance between the two worlds!’ Sneh told her. ‘I know I am missing out on a lot, but it’s difficult to reconcile the two. I can take care of only one part, and my career seems to be the one for me.advertisementadvertisementI am scared; I may not end up doing a good job of marriage and then also ruin my career,’ said Anita. They finished the last dregs in their cups thoughtfully and then chatted for some more time before Anita went off to attend an official meeting.Anita left Sneh rejuvenated and lost in fond memories of her “jobbing days”. She prepared the lunch and laid it on the table with her domestic help, Lalji Bhaiya. It was a Saturday. On impulse, she decided to have lunch in the lawn. She instructed Lalji Bhaiya to put the garden chairs and the table outside. Raj’s car arrived as the children were getting down from the bus. All of them entered the house together, chatting. Pihu was talking about the beautiful butterfly they had made in the art and craft class.Ajju yelled excitedly, ‘Mamma, are we having lunch in the lawn today?’ Sneh smiled. ‘Yay, yay, yay,’ both children shouted. Raj looked at her and smiled. ‘You look tired,’ said Sneh handing a casserole to Lalji Bhaiya. ‘And you look um? a little different,’ said Raj. ‘Different? That’s not what I was looking for,’ grinned Sneh. She followed him to the bedroom where he kept his briefcase and undid his shirt buttons. ‘So say it. I know you want to tell me something.’ ‘Guess who came to meet me?’ ‘Who?’ ‘Anita!’ ‘What? She remembered you after so long? Well! That’s some surprise.’with any of my friends either. It was so nice to have seen her.’ ‘So what did you talk about?’ ‘You better freshen up and come outside. We’ll talk there. Let me look up the children in the meanwhile.’ By the time Raj came out, all three of them were happily ensconced in their seats. ‘Oho! A lovely lunch party al fresco!’ said Raj.They began eating as Sneh filled him in with the day’s details. She put off telling him about Anita’s vehement urging for her to go back to work. Sneh plied them with extra helpings of food in between their chatter. ‘Look how Lalji Bhaiya is balancing the glasses on the tray!’ said Pihu. ‘He’ll tumble down before he gets them here,’ shouted Ajju. They looked in the direction where Lalji bhaiya was inching his way from the kitchen to the lawn.’Oh! So sorry Lalji Bhaiya, today’s change of venue has been difficult,’ Sneh mumbled guiltily as she got up to help him unburden his latest sortie. ‘Don’t worry! I’ll get a food trolley for next time,’ she added light-heartedly. Raj looked up from his plate. ‘A food trolley? You just need an excuse to buy something or the other. It will be used once in a blue moon, and relegated to one corner of the house.’ ‘Oh, but it can be used routinely too. It’ll save us several rounds of ferrying things. I think it’s going to give us a good excuse to hold many more such picnics,’ said Sneh happily. ‘You and your ilk,’ muttered Raj and continued with his lunch. Though she remained silent, Sneh was jolted from her comfort zone. The children licked their fingers as they finished.’Mazaa aa gaya! You make the best paneer pasanda in the world,’ said Raj as he wiped up his plate of the last morsel. Sneh knew her husband meant it, but was just not able to accept his compliment fully. She helped Lalji Bhaiya collect the plates and bowls for the trips back tothe kitchen. The mobile rang as Raj moved to get up.’Hello?’ He heard the other person speak to him, gave a few short replies and put the mobile down. ‘Sneh! Guess what, my new golf set is on its way from Delhi, and should reach soon. It’s a real top-set?’ ‘A golf set?’ Sneh broke in. ‘But you already have one. You said it was the best in the trade and would last you a lifetime. Now why this?”I don’t know whether I am taking the right step, but I am open to the idea of copywriting, before it gets too late for me,’ Sneh told Anita’Oh! On my last trip to Delhi, I was with my boss in CP. We came across this huge sports shop and went berserk over the top-of-the-line sports stuff kept there. On an impulse, I had ordered a Cleveland golf set. But since the shop had only one set at that time, the manager promised to send me a new set as soon as it came in. That was his call just now – he has confirmed the purchase and the address.’ ‘Oh but you have one set already,’ said Sneh rather lamely. Of course he had wanted it! She fumed inwardly. It didn’t matter if the old golf set sat in a corner gathering dust. The more she thought about it, the more unsettled she became. The day passed as usual but her mind remained occupied. Raj had made expensive purchases in the past but this time Sneh was riled. It wasn’t just his inconsiderate shopping but  the chauvinism attached that was galling her no end.’I need to find some space, a niche for myself… and I must do this before I lose myself completely,’ she thought amid a tumult of emotions. By the next evening, she had made a decision. She called Anita on her cellphone to tell her about it. But before she could say anything, Anita launched on her own. ‘Guess what, Sneh! I have decided to propose to Praful!’ ‘What, you’ll propose?’ ‘Yeah. That’ll be something like tossing the coin for heads or tails. If he says yes, I go ahead and marry. I will take a chance on what my seniors dole out to me. I am not letting that scare me any more.’ ‘And if he refuses?’ asked Sneh.’Well then I go ahead with the status quo. And then it will be a job without Praful. Can’t let the guy hang in the balance because of my insecurities,’ answered Anita. ‘Hmm. For as far as I can see, you’ll be Mrs Praful very soon. I think you are taking the right step.’ ‘So that’s about me. What had you called me about?’ asked Anita. Sneh sighed. She felt as if she was betraying Raj. Without going into any detail she told Anita, ‘I don’t know whether I am taking the right step, but I am open to the idea of copywriting, before it gets too late for me.”Great thought, madam. I’m proud of you!’ said Anita enthusiastically. ‘Yes. But it is going to be difficult starting up again, Anita. So I want to go slow first. Maybe part-time. And I will definitely need your help and support,’ said Sneh. ‘And I will need your help getting started if things work out at my end too,’ said Anita. Both friends braced themselves for a fresh innings once again just as they had a few years ago.advertisementlast_img read more
